- What's new in 0.54?
- -------------------
-
- Well, first, some bugs are fixed:
- - a message used by !MailList wasn't being sent by 0.53, this is fixed.
- - folder operations from TTFN could cause a Newsbase crash in 0.53.
- - automatic expiry works more correctly!
- - some small fixes to ka9q transport programs.
- - extra checks in filter redirection to prevent any message loss (if the
- redirection is invalid).
-
- Second, some improvements are:
- - improved user interface in some places.
- - extra options for expiry behaviour.
- - can create and use long usernames (though TTFN doesn't support these fully
- at present). Username aliases. User passwords.
- - Mail and news accepted from multiple transports.
- - Outgoing mail & news can be sent to different transports.
- - Support for external "New groups" programs.
- - article lookup by message-ID is now supported.
- - several functions are faster.
- - online help is now provided.
-
- Now, the "bad news" - really more of a slight inconvenience during the
- upgrade. The format of the group information and configuration files has
- changed, and so you will have to reconfigure Newsbase 0.54 when you install
- it. Most of the default choices should be sensible. There will also be a
- short delay the first time it is run, while it recreates the new-format
- newsgroups file.
-
- *** if you have specific exiry times configured for newsgroups, you will
- have to reset them ***
-
-
- ** If you are upgrading from an earlier version of 0.54... **

- ... and suffer from "phantom articles" in TTFN - where new/unread articles
- are reported to be available, but aren't there - then this bug is fixed in
- this version. You can either wait for the problem to go away by itself (as
- new articles arrive), or you can regenerate the "groupinfo" file by
- ADJUST-clicking on "Rescan" in the groups setup window. The latter will, or
- should, fix the problem immediately, at the expense of losing
- individually-configured group expiry times.
